LISTEN: Musician Remembers Florida Native Dickey Betts

TAMPA -- Dickey Betts, singer and guitarist best known for his work with the Allman Brothers Band, has died at the age of 80 at his home in Osprey, near Sarasota.

Tampa Bay area singer and guitar player Damon Fowler grew up hearing Betts' music, and got to play with Betts' band on his last tour in 2018. Fowler says people will remember Betts for the "weaving harmonies" of the Allman Brothers' sound as well as his unhurried and spacious solos. "He was a killer guitar player, but I think the way he thought of music was the special thing about him." Fowler says the "beautiful fabric" of Betts' music will be his legacy.

Betts wrote and sang on one of the Allman Brothers Band's biggest hits, "Ramblin' Man."
